So why does this Hess toy command so much money. Who knows, maybe because it’s not a truck and it looks cool. Honestly it’s a highly desirable Hess collectable and the first non-vehicle of the first three Hess toys produced.
They say the
1966 Hess tanker ship is an exact replica of the official “Hess Voyager” that was built in 1962. It appears to be difficult photos of the ship this toy was modeled after but there are
some references here.
This ship was originally priced at
$1.89 at participating stations and there were a total of 150,000 toy tankers made. The insert that accompanied this toy was very interesting. It read:
“Gift Idea for that special child”
A truly great toy made in the U.S.A. It's nearly a foot and a half long; has fore and aft and port and starboard navigational lights; includes Eveready battery; rolls on land; floats on water. Realistic in every detail to spark the imagination of every boy and girl.

Some of the unique attributes of this toy is that as the ability to float and roll on the ground. The Hess Voyager actually is mounted on rolling wheels. Both the working bow and stern have lights that work. The red and green port and starboard running lights are controlled by a switch located on the deck of the ship. Some of the finer details include anchors and propellers with a proud flag at the stern of the ship. An interesting fact about this Hess toy is its one of two Hess toys made by the famous
Marx Toy Company which made this Hess Voyager Tanker Ship in the USA. Other Marx toys were made in
China and
Hong Kong.
One of the neat features about this toy is its rolling wheels. Other unique attributes are a working bow with stern lights. The red and green port and starboard running lights are controlled by a switch located on the deck of the ship. There are a number of small parts that are delicate like the anchors and propellers including a flag at the stern. This Hess toy was
made in the USA by the Marx Toy Company, which only made two toys for Hess in the USA, the 1966 Tanker Ship and the 1967 Tanker Truck. This 1966 Hess Voyager is painted in red and black with white accents.
